What are ear seeds and how do they work?

Ear seeds are small seeds or pellets placed on specific points of the outer ear to apply gentle, continuous pressure. Traditionally made from the dried seeds of the vaccaria plant, they're now also produced in stainless steel and gold. The practice draws on auriculotherapy, a discipline developed in the 1950s by French physician Paul Nogier, who mapped the body's organs and systems onto points along the outer ear. Press the right point, the theory goes, and you send a signal through the nervous system to the corresponding area of the body.

How do ear seeds actually work?

The mechanism proposed is neurological: sustained pressure on auricular points is thought to stimulate the vagus nerve and influence the brain's reflex centres, promoting relaxation and reducing the physiological markers of stress. A 2021 review in Medical Acupuncture found meaningful support for auriculotherapy in managing chronic pain and anxiety. Research into libido applications is more recent and still developing, though the connection between stress reduction and desire is well-established; when the nervous system is calmer, the body becomes more available to pleasure.

What are ear seeds used for?

Stress and anxiety reduction are the most research-supported applications. Libido support, sleep, and mild pain management also have a reasonable evidence base. Many women use them as part of a broader body-awareness practice, a small, daily act of attending to how they feel rather than pushing through.

How long do ear seeds stay on?

Three to five days. You press them gently throughout the day to activate the point, then remove and replace. No appointment, no practitioner required.

Are they easy to use at home?

Yes. A good kit includes an ear map showing which points correspond to which functions, self-adhesive seeds, and tweezers for precise placement. The LUA ear seeds come with all three, in a 24k gold-plated design that sits as comfortably on your nightstand as it does behind your ear.
